Megatrucks, a reality
On 12 April 2016, the Spanish Directorate-General of Traffic (DGT) published the regulation that establishes the requirements under which this body authorised the mobility of certain vehicles within the European Modular System, better known as megatrucks.
Previously, on March 2 this agency conducted a real traffic test. The combination chosen was a refrigerated trailer plus SOR refrigerated trailer and two tractors of different powers. The test involved driving up the Somosierra mountain port through its two slopes.
The round trip began at kilometer 37 of the A-1 highway and ended at kilometer 115 of the same road. The design of this route was planned looking for the most demanding conditions, since the set faced slopes up to 8% and several sections with a 6-7% difference in height.
The purpose of this type of vehicle assemblies is to improve the efficiency and safety of road transport, while allowing a more competitive operation of the markets, in accordance with the Plan of Measures for Growth, Competitiveness and Efficiency approved with the Spanish Council of Ministers on 6 June 2014.
Therefore, the first official megatruck circulating on the roads of Spain bears the SOR seal.
